Arena — live quizzes

Arena is the live quiz game you run from the stage. You build a quiz, launch a session, and attendees join from their phones by scanning a QR code. Questions go up one at a time, answers score points, and everyone earns XP that feeds a workspace-wide leaderboard and a set of achievement badges.

Arena needs the Flare plan or above. On the free Beam tier the section shows an upgrade prompt instead.

The overview is a summary: how many quizzes you have, how many sessions have run, and the five most recent sessions.

Building a quiz

A quiz is a title and an ordered list of questions. Each question carries its options, which option is correct, a time limit and a point value.

Two settings sit on the quiz rather than the question, and both have defaults:

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Time limit20 secondsHow long attendees get to answer, unless a question overrides it
Points1,000What a correct answer is worth, unless a question overrides it
Speed bonusOnFaster correct answers score more than slower ones

A quiz moves through Draft → Ready → Archived. You can also clone a quiz, which is the quickest way to run a variant at the next event.

A quiz does not have to belong to an event. Leaving it unattached is how you keep a reusable question bank. A session, though, always belongs to one event — see below.

The quiz builder scrolled to its questions: Question 1 is a True / False question reading "The keynote starts before the networking break." with True ticked as correct; Question 2 is a single-choice question, "Which hall is the main stage in?", with four options and Hall A ticked. Each question carries a Type select and Time and Points override fields showing the quiz defaults of 20 seconds and 1000 points.

Running a session

A session is one hosted run of a quiz. To launch one the quiz must be Ready and you must pick the event it belongs to.

The host control panel is the screen you drive from:

  • the join code, QR code and play URL attendees use to get in
  • live counts of who has joined and how many have answered, refreshed every few seconds
  • a preview of the current question
  • the host controls: Start → Reveal → Advance → End

Reveal shows the correct answer and the scores for that question; Advance moves to the next one; End closes the session. Ended sessions stay in the list at /t/<slug>/arena/sessions, which you can filter to live or ended.

The host control panel for a session waiting in its lobby: the join code 6CVFU2 in large type, the matching QR code, the play URL with a Copy link button, counters reading "5 players" and "No answers yet" beside "Status: Lobby", a panel saying "Lobby — waiting to start", and the Start and End session buttons.

The panel above is the lobby, before the first question. Reveal and Advance appear alongside End once you press Start and a question is live.

XP, the leaderboard and badges

Points won in a session convert to XP, and XP is what the leaderboard ranks.

The leaderboard at /t/<slug>/arena/leaderboard is workspace-wide and all-time — it ranks players by their total XP across every session you have ever run, not by a single game. Anonymous players are excluded from it.

Badges are achievements attendees unlock as they play. The catalog at /t/<slug>/arena/badges lists the five that ship today, each with what it takes to earn it and the XP it awards:

  • Quiz Rookie
  • Sharpshooter
  • On Fire
  • Podium Finish
  • Champion

The catalog is read-only — these five are the set, and custom badge rules are not something you can author today.

Note. These are achievement badges inside the game. They are unrelated to the printed name badges attendees wear — for those, see Badges & check-in.
